Apple and EMI to offer DRM FREE! Singles

I just heard this on NPR, EMI has reached an agreement with Apple. This is simply a small step, however it’s going to cost 30 cents more. at $1.29 instead of $0.99. Also, the audio quality, I’m guessing the bit-rate, will be higher. I think this is a good move, obviously we won’t move straight into DRM territory. Also, in my opinion, this is good, most people just buy the singles anyways. Maybe this will help the sales of other songs as well? I know that it has been said that the single died with the advent of the CD. With artists having the ability to pretty much put almost double the amount of music on one disc, they felt compelled to do so. And what has resulted is a single atmosphere, one good song surrounded by filler. I think this has helped lead to the advent of illegal music sharing, simply b/c no one wanted to buy music to listen to the one, or two good songs.

I also believe that this has led directly to people buying less songs on on-line stores. Artists, for the most part, are still making the same good song surrounded by shit sings, and people are skipping over the shit for only the good songs. I’m not sure exactly what the answer to this is. However, I still stand by my proclamation to never buy music on-line.

You all know I hate DRM, so maybe this is a small step in the right direction.
